Life as Process.

This is remembering the adage ‘this too shall pass’ versus thinking a good or bad thing will last forever. Thinking this way gives us the power and leverage to look for the beginnings and endings of things and adjust, accept and plan accordingly.

Reflect on where you are right now and notice what is happening to you and grabbing your attention.

Is it some kind of suffering or celebration?

Lean into your experience – how exactly bad or good is it … and why exactly?

Complete this sentence to yourself: It is particularly bad or good because this is exactly how it feels …., and/or this is exactly what is going on in the situation ...

You know you’ve captured it when you feel you could tell a friend and feel confident they would know exactly what you’re talking about.

This is powerful because you’ve captured the ‘It’ – now you can apply the law of – ‘It’ too will pass – powerful forces are already at work causing ‘It’ to change.

If ‘It’’s a good thing you might think about how you can support ‘It’ to last longer or make the most of ‘It’ while ‘It’ lasts.

If ‘It’ is a bad thing you can think about about how ‘It’ is already in flux– rising or falling and how you might get on the right side of ‘It’ in order to feel in better relationship with ‘It’.

Remember there are forces at play which will be interacting and changing ‘It’. In addition, a powerful thing you can do is change your relationship to ‘It’.

Sometimes this is hard though, particularly when It’  absolutely sucks! – situations and our perspectives can be hard to shift and in these times it is helpful to gain the support of another.

An aspect of psychotherapy is the art of identifying our perspectives and tuning them to be in better relationship with the flow of life around us (what is happening whether we like it or not) – this can help us take more resolute and affirmative action, or get into flow with more ease, acceptance, and fulfilment with what is happening, and also, it It is good stuff - enjoy it more!
